Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML)
Symptoms
In acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), overproduction of malignant white blood cells called myeloblasts inhibits the production of normal blood cells, weakening the body and leaving victims prone to infection. Common symptoms signaling AML include fatigue, bone and joint pain, chronic infection, bruising, and anemia. These symptoms may often be mistaken for common diseases such as influenza.
Treatment Options
Treatment options for AML include chemotherapy, bone marrow and/or cord blood transplant, certain drug therapies dependent on the subtype of AML a patient has, as well as certain types of proteing therapy meant to attach to leukemia cells and help the immune system destroy them.
Regardless of the treatment path chosen, and early diagnosis and early treatment are vital to successfully fighting AML. Based on the person's age, AML subtype, and other risk factors, patients may be eligible to participate in many clinical drug trials due to the ever-evolving understanding of the tools available to battle this disease.
