What Is Testosterone?
Testosterone is a male hormone that is responsible for the growth and maturation of the prostate and other male sex organs as well as sex drive and sexual function. Testosterone also helps increase muscle mass and strength and maintain bone strength. Doctors have prescribed supplements for men who have experienced a reduction in testosterone.
Testosterone supplementation is a growing industry, with millions of men having been prescribed testosterone. Drug manufacturers are aggressively marketing their products, which come in the forms of gels, creams, pills and injections. The following are some of the brand names of testosterone supplements:
What Are the Risks of Testosterone Supplements?
Researchers have found a direct connection between testosterone supplements and heart problems. Men with heart problems who are using low-T prescription products have a 30 percent higher chance of suffering stroke, heart attack or death than healthy men who do not take supplements, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association, which in November 2013 published the findings of a recent study. Furthermore, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a safety alert on Jan. 31, 2014, announcing that the agency is investigating the risk of stroke, heart attack and death in men using these products.
In another recent study, researchers at UCLA looked at the heart attack rate within 90 days of starting testosterone therapy for more than 55,000 men. The study found that the risk more than doubled for men 65 and older. In men younger than 65 with a history of heart disease, the risk almost tripled.
Men with the following conditions or heart-related problems and who are using low-testosterone treatment products area also at risk of suffering a heart attack, stroke or death while using the supplements:
- Artery blockage
- High cholesterol
- Plaque buildup
- Previous heart attack
