A motorcyclist was critically injured when a vehicle turned left into the path of the motorcycle. According to reports, the motorcyclist was travelling southbound on Manslick when a driver travelling northbound attempted a left-hand turn onto Crums Lane. The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. He was transported to University Hospital where he underwent surgery. The investigation is ongoing; however, Louisville Metro Police did not suspect that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the Louisville motorcycle accident.
Protect Yourself When Riding
You cannot control what other drivers do when they are behind the wheel; however, you can take precautions to reduce your risk of serious injury in a motorcycle crash. Before you even climb on your motorcycle, you can protect yourself by choosing to wear protective clothing and gear.
A motorcycle helmet is probably the most important piece of safety equipment you can use when riding your motorcycle. Anyone operating a motorcycle or is a passenger on a motorcycle that is under the age of 21 years is required to wear a helmet by Kentucky law. Furthermore, if you have held your motorcycle license less than a year, you must wear a helmet. However, research has shown that wearing a helmet can prevent serious injury and reduce the risk of death from a motorcycle accident.
Many riders do not think about ear protection; however, long-term exposure to engine noise and wind noise can cause permanent hearing damage. Wearing the correct ear protection can protect your hearing; however, you must be sure that you do not interfere with your ability to hear warnings and other sounds that you need to hear in order to avoid collisions or danger.
Protective clothing and accessories will not prevent a motorcycle crash but you can reduce your risk of being seriously injured by wearing protective gear. There are a variety of items you may choose to add to your motorcycle wardrobe including protective vests, knee and elbow covers, back supports, and shoulder protects. Before choosing protective clothing and accessories, read reviews and research each item until you are sure you are choosing the best equipment to keep you safe while you ride.
What you choose to wear on your feet is just as important as what you choose to wear on your head. Protecting your ankles and feet are important. Boots specifically designed for motorcyclists are the best choice because they are reinforced in critical areas (ankle, shin, and calf) to provide the maximum protection in a motorcycle wreck. Boots also provide protection from flying debris.
Choose gloves specifically designed for motorcyclists that provide protection, comfort, and ease of control. Gloves should protect your entire hand, including your wrists.
In addition to wearing protective clothing and gear, avoid distractions and always remain alert when riding a motorcycle. You need to be prepared to take evasive action if another driver fails to pay attention.
